Protect the public and your organization from cyberattacks
State and local government agencies are facing higher rates of cyber attacks and threats. As government agencies expand their digital operations by moving information and to the cloud and offer more online services through websites and applications, their cyber risks increase.
A 2019 Ponemon Institute survey found that 88% of the public sector organizations reported experiencing at least one damaging cyberattack over the past two years, causing significant disruption and downtime in business operations.
Lumifi takes the time to understand our government clients’ needs around compliance, scalability, operations, accessibility, and reporting.
Government agencies are particularly vulnerable to phishing scams due to their relationships with other departments of government, outside vendors, and database of public information.
Exposed emails do not necessarily have to be breached from the outside. Internal emails containing privileged documents and information can be intercepted without proper encryption and security measures in place.
Additionally, trusted vendors’ exposed emails can create costly mistakes.
Such is the case in 2019 when the City of Chicago’s Department of Aviation lost over a million dollars to a phishing scam, according to CBS Local. The email appeared to come from a legitimate vendor and instructed the department to change routing numbers for payments. Thankfully the bank was able to put a hold on the scammer’s account and recover funds.
Government agencies are seeing costly ransomware attacks. As ransomware becomes more sophisticated, local governments need to be able to assess their vulnerabilities, consistently tune and
Recently in Riviera Beach, Florida, someone within the local police department opened an infected email that caused the entire system to shut down, according to the Palm Beach Post. The ransomware attack resulted in the department taking all their operations offline, preventing 911 calls from being entered into their digital systems and having them pay employees via handwritten checks. Ultimately, the department paid the attacks ransom of 65 Bitcoin (then worth more than $600,000).
Any government agencies using operational technology (OT) equipment or Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) connected devices must also have advanced security protocols in place.
Unlike computer and mobile endpoints, OT and IIoT devices are susceptible to unknown and sophisticated attacks. Next-Generation Anti-Virus solutions must be properly tuned and monitored 24/7 to optimize and provide more complete protection of these advanced devices.
International malicious actors are a unique threat to the public sector. Verizon’s 2019 Data Breach Investigations Report highlighted that nation-state attacks have increased from 12% of attacks in 2017 to 23% in 2018.
As guardians of sensitive citizen and private business information, their networks contain valuable information that attract cyber attackers.
In October 2019, a state-sponsored hacking campaign brought down more than 2,000 websites across Georgia, including government and court websites containing case materials and sensitive personal data, according to GCN.
