Recently in Riviera Beach, Florida, someone within the local police department opened an infected email that caused the entire system to shut down, according to the Palm Beach Post. The ransomware attack resulted in the department taking all their operations offline, preventing 911 calls from being entered into their digital systems and having them pay employees via handwritten checks. Ultimately, the department paid the attacks ransom of 65 Bitcoin (then worth more than $600,000).
